RAR and zIP are two formats. Both use LZ77, which replaces duplicate strings with pointers to the previous event. Yet, RAR usually compresses better (at the cost of more memory) by using a bigger sliding window so it is able to point to older references
The chief purpose of both applications will be to put many files, or an entire « tree » of folders and files, into one file for more convenient management. (And take them out again later. )
It is often easier to give someone a single file that contains everything than an enormous set of files that are different. At the same time, both software normally « compress » the files to make them take up less disk space
In earlier times when disks and bandwidth were smaller, this compression was a main characteristic – now it is usually never as significant as the grouping function.
Until you especially need a characteristic that is supported in only one of them (there aren’t many such), which one to use is a matter of taste – you may find one simpler or more convenient than the other
Another difference is that ZIP is an open format but RAR is proprietary. ZIP compressors are open and free source. The RAR decompressor (unrar) is free, but the compressor is not.
The chief difference is in the business driving the software. WinZip and WinRAR computer tips are two different software developed and sold by two distinct businesses. They are both used to compact and expand file(s)
They both can enlarge both. ZIP and. RAR files (and other formats), but WinRAR can compact files in either format whereas WinZip can simply compact files in the. ZIP format.
